Rewards & loyalty

Points are only worth what you can redeem them for.

A practical guide to earning, comparing and using loyalty programmes in the UAE — without the hype.

What loyalty points actually are

A points programme is a promise: spend in a certain way, and the provider gives you a unit you can redeem later. The unit is not money. Its value is set by the programme, at the moment you redeem, under rules that can change.

  • Earning is usually tied to a spend amount, a partner, or a tier.
  • The value only becomes real at redemption — not at earning.
  • Programmes can change earn rates, redemption tables and expiry rules.

How earning really works

Two programmes can advertise the same headline rate and still be very different. What matters is which purchases count, whether there is a cap, and what happens to the points when a partner leaves the programme.

  • Check which spend categories are excluded.
  • Look for monthly or annual earning caps.
  • Ask whether points survive a partner leaving.

Common redemption restrictions

Restrictions are where most disappointment lives. Read them before you build a balance, not after.

  • Minimum redemption thresholds.
  • Blackout dates and capacity limits.
  • Points plus cash splits and excluded partners.
  • Transfers between programmes are rare — never assume they exist.

Comparing earning rates honestly

Convert everything to one number: the value of 1,000 points in dirhams at the redemption you would realistically use. An impressive-looking earn rate can be worth less than a modest one with better redemption value.

  • Use a redemption you would actually book.
  • Include any membership fee in the comparison.
  • Re-check the maths once a year.

Stopping points from expiring

Most expiry rules are activity-based: any earn or redeem keeps the account alive. A yearly calendar reminder is usually enough — but only if you know the rule.

  • Note the expiry rule per programme.
  • Set one reminder a year to review balances.
  • Redeem small balances before they lapse.

Organising your memberships

Three programmes you use well beat ten you forget. Keep one list of what you joined, what it costs, and when it renews.

  • Cancel memberships you did not use this year.
  • Keep the account email consistent.
  • Store no loyalty passwords in shared notes.

Work out what a balance is worth

Enter a balance and how many points your programme needs for AED 1 at the redemption you would use.

Illustrative value

AED 171

A calculation, not advice. Programmes set their own redemption tables and can change them.

What we never claim

  • That points from different programmes can be combined — that needs verifying with the programmes themselves.
  • That a specific earning rate is the best available — rates change and depend on your spending.
  • That a balance is guaranteed to keep its value.
